    eBook (, June 27, 2019)
Once upon a time there was a little girl. Her name was Merrimeg.Sometimes she was good, and sometimes she was naughty. But she was always merry. One morning her mother gave her a little broom and told her to sweep the kitchen floor and her mother said, “Now, Merrimeg, be sure to sweep all the dust neatly into the dustpan, and carry it out to the cabbage garden. Will you do that?”“Yes, mother,” said Merrimeg.“Don’t sweep any dust into the corners,” said her mother; and she left Merrimeg in the kitchen, and went into the front room to make the beds.Merrimeg swept and swept with her little broom, and she made up a little song and sang it out loud, keeping time with the broom.Every little while her mother would call to her from the next room and say,——“Have you finished yet, Merrimeg?”“Not yet, mother!” Merrimeg would say, and then she would go on with her sweeping and singing. She was very happy, but this wasn’t her day to be good; for she was in a great hurry to be out in the garden in the sunshine, and she forgot all about what her mother had said to her; so instead of wasting time on the dustpan, she swept all the dust into the nice clean fireplace, a very large fireplace, big enough to roast a pig in. An iron pot was hanging there, but there wasn’t any fire, and her mother had just cleaned off the hearth so that it was as spotless as new brick. She swept the dust from under the table and chairs, and out of the corners, and everywhere. And every single bit of the dust she swept into the fireplace, and piled it up at the back on the clean bricks, out of sight. And all the while she kept on singing.

Book 1. Merrimeg: Merrimeg was a little girl. Sometimes she was good, and sometimes she was naughty. But she was always merry. Book 2. Solario the Tailor: His Tales of the Magic Doublet: It is all about a Forest Kingdom, and a Great Forest that was enchanted by a witch, an irritable sort of person who— Not that she was to be blamed altogether, in my judgment, for she had been provoked to it by a page boy belonging to the King of the Forest, and I am personally not surprised that this young rogue was in consequence spirited away in the middle of the night, no one knew whither.

  • The Old Tobacco Shop

    William Bowen

    Paperback (Blurb, March 10, 2017)
Freddie looked, and in the doorway, leaning against the doorpost, with his hands in his trousers' pockets, and one foot crossed over the other, stood a little man, not so very much taller than himself, and certainly no taller than the figure on the stand, who stared at Freddie as if he knew all about human boys and did not trust them out of his sight. Freddie looked at him and then at the wooden figure beside the door; they might have been brothers. The little man had a hump on his back, and his breast stuck out in front; his head was big and square, and he had high cheek-bones; his face was bony and his mouth wide, and his big nose curved down and his chin curved up; but he did not wear knee breeches; his trousers were the trousers of grown-ups, and his coat was a square coat, buttoned tight over his chest from top to bottom.

  • The Old Tobacco Shop: Large Print

    William Bowen

Paperback (Independently published, June 27, 2020)
When the Little Boy first went to the Old Tobacco Shop, he stood a long while before going in, to look at the wooden figure which stood beside the door. His father was sitting at home in his carpet-slippers, waiting for tobacco for his pipe, but when the Little Boy saw the wooden figure he forgot all about hurrying,—"Now don't be long," his mother had said, and his father had said "Hurry back,"—but he forgot all about hurrying, and stood and looked at the wooden figure a long time: a little hunchbacked man, not so very much taller than himself, on a low wooden box, holding out in one hand a packet of black wooden cigars. His back was terribly humped up between his shoulders, his face was square and bony, if wood can be said to be bony, he was bareheaded and bald-headed, he had a wide mouth, and his high nose curved down over it and his pointed chin curved up under it; and his breast stuck out in front almost as much as his shoulders stuck out behind. The Little Boy's name was Freddie; his mother called him that, and his father usually called him Fred; but sometimes his father called him Frederick, in fact whenever he didn't come back after he had been told to hurry, and then his father looked at him—you know that look—and said "Frederick!" just like that. But his mother never called him anything but Freddie, even when he was late.
  • The Old Tobacco Shop - A True Account of What Befell a Little Boy in Search of Adventure

    William Bowen

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, April 17, 2015)
About the Book The action and adventure genre in fiction depicts events or a series of events that happen outside the ordinary course of the protagonist's daily life, generally accompanied by dangerous episodes and physical action. Adventure stories are quick moving, with the pace of the plot being a critical component of mood setting. Action and adventure have been common book themes since the earliest days of fiction writing. In fact, the plots of Medieval romances were comprised of a series of adventures. Action / adventure fiction often overlaps with other genres, such as: war novels, crime novels, sea stories, Robinsonades, and spy stories. Also in this Book Our titles on adventurers and explorers present the lives and exploits of people who explored or travelled the world in a pioneering way. These include naturalists, sailors, mountain climbers, dog sledders, swimmers, pilots, and underwater explorers. Their activities had profound effects on the dissemination of religion, agricultural techniques, cultural values, disease, and the establishment of colonies throughout the world. And in this Book The coming-of-age genre in literature focuses on the growth and development of a protagonist from youth to adulthood. Such stories tend to emphasize dialogue or internal monologue rather than focussing on action, and are often set back in time. Typically, the subjects of coming-of-age stories are teenagers who experience some issues or traumas during their formative years. Classic coming-of-age novels are Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: republish only hand checked books; that are high quality; enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. You can search "Leopold Classic Library" in categories of your interest to find other books in our extensive collection. Happy reading!
